Planning: Anciliaries

Practice Ancilliary

LINKED TO EVALUATION Q2

To get myself familliar with photoshop and how it works I decided to make a practice ancilliary using the magazine I'm going to use as a template for where the masthead and sub titles needed to be placed. I feel that this helped me to fully understand the conventions of a magazine.
I used a "classy" magazine to try and mimic and I think that I did quite a good job of it.
I cut out the image in photoshop first and then I added in the masthead and the main sub title. I used a brush stroke in photoshop to get that paintbrush look on the bottom and the left hand corner of the magazine. I then transferred the image over to publisher where I added more text because I find it easier to do it that way.

Ancillary Research

To see what sort of elements I wanted to put into my magazine cover I had to look at some exaples.
I decided in the end that I was going to choose a "classy" magazine to do as this fitted more with the genre of my soap opera.

Evaluating the Hollyoaks Trailer

LINKED TO EVALUATION Q1

• The Hollyoaks trailer begins with a title card to let the audience know what is going to be shown next on the screen and also to give existing viewers something to recognise and get excited about.
• We as the audience are shown quick edits of each of the characters to give viewers some excitement as to what is going to happen in the next episode. With various shot types to allow the audience to recognise relationships between the characters.
• We get parallel narratives of short stories between each character to show that they are all linked together.
• Hash tags showing that Hollyoaks is connected with social networking sites such as twitter, this attracts a younger audience to the programme as they will be using these websites
• Alot of Mise En Scene is used in this trailer as we see on the Charity boxes that show woman naked for a charity event, the location of the kitchen show people are at home and the audience can relate to this. Smoothies on a table outside with plastic cups and straws shows friends meeting up outside (socialising)
• The non-diegetic soundtrack fits in with the emotions and storylines shown in the trailer therefore helping to portray what’s going on.
