American Soap Opera Basics

• American Soap operas serve different purposes to British soap operas.
• British soap operas are generally gritty and working class, they’re very real.

• Hollyoaks is a bit more glamorous. Then there is scripted reality which is different to soap operas such as the only way is Essex and made in Chelsea.

• American Soaps are a lot more glamorous and they’re used as a form of escapism, this makes people feel good although they have unattainable lifestyles.
• It allows people to escape into American dream world for an hour.
• American Soaps always have beautiful actors and actresses who always have “perfect” appearances.

• They are very melodramatic and contain emotional stories. It is a very feminine genre. The scheduling is “daytime drama” as it is women at home who watch it.

• Televised love stories.
• They run in seasons. There’ll be a climax then they’ll have a break and come back to the series
• Things that happen in the previous episodes aren’t mentioned in the next episode
• American soap operas have non diegetic sound which tells you how to feel and makes it feel more dramatic.
• English soap operas have something in the scene where the music is coming from
