English Soap Opera Basics

• UK soaps tend to contain more realism than US and spanish soaps. (Eastenders use a blue filter on the light to make the storyline feel more gritty and realistic)
• Traditional soap operas run continuously- character story lines overlap
• Can have 10-15 main characters a range of ages, genders, sexualities, races, to appeal to as large an audience as possible
• Soap operas become part of the national psyche- they weave their way into our culture
• Characters become “people”, they are spoken of as if they’re family as they become so improtant in people’s lives
• Audience- soaps tend to be aimed at female audiences. This affects scheduling, storylines, characters and narrative perspective
• Story- events that are unfolding
• Narrative Perspective- Point of view the story is told from
Catharsis- Emotional cleansing. Watching someone else go through the same situation as you makes you feel better
